When are ACT and SAT Test Scores Available?

One of the most common questions we receive at the Learning Island is how soon students can expect to receive their ACT or SAT scores. In general, ACT scores start to become available about ten days after the exam date. SAT scores tend to take longer. The earliest a student can expect to receive his or her SAT scores is approximately three to four weeks after the exam.

As a service to our readers, we’re providing the dates that have been officially released by ACT, Inc. and the College Board. However, the score report dates for the ACT and SAT are not completely analogous, and both sets come with certain qualifiers. The following will help you to understand what the dates provided at the end of this lesson really represent.

Understanding the ACT Score Report Dates

ACT, Inc. provides a range of dates during which score reports for a given test date will be sent out. While many students receive their online score reports toward the start dates, there is no guarantee that you and your colleges will receive them before the end date. In addition, you’ll notice that the ACT dates listed are for multiple choice scores only. Scores for ACT Writing are typically released two weeks after multiple choice scores are. While you can see your multiple choice scores online as soon as they are posted, none of your scores for a given ACT date will be sent to your colleges until your Writing score is released. If you plan to take the Writing section, make sure you take this additional time into account when considering test dates, college application deadlines, and so on. If you request a paper copy of your score report, you can expect to receive it approximately two weeks after all of your scores have been released. Ordering a hard copy will not delay the posting or sending of your electronic scores to colleges.

Understanding the SAT Score Report Dates

The SAT simply provides a list of the dates when SAT test results begin to become available to colleges and students. As with the ACT, there is no guarantee that your test results will be available on the first day. It may take as long as two to four additional weeks for the College Board to process and send your results. You’ll also notice that the College Board provides different dates for when test results are available to colleges and to students. With the exception of the December 3rd test date, the College Board begins sending score reports to colleges the day before it begins releasing them to students. This means that it is likely that the colleges you have selected to have your scores sent to will receive them before you do. The SAT does provide a service where students can receive their score reports via phone as soon as they are available. However, this service requires an additional fee, so it is not a practical option for most students.

Sending Score Reports to Colleges

Students can send their ACT or SAT score reports to up to four colleges for free. To take advantage of this service, you must choose to send your scores when you register for the exam. You can send SAT scores up to nine days after the exam date (NOT the day your scores are available) for free. Sending your scores after this grace period requires an additional fee. There is no grace period for the ACT. If you do not choose to send your scores when you register or you want to send them to more or different colleges, you will have to pay extra.
