A solid mathematical foundation is important regardless of whether or not a student intends to pursue more advanced math classes in high school or later in college. Chemistry and especially physics rely on the skills gained during Algebra. Mastery of the concepts, formulas, and problem solving skills of algebra and geometry are essential for the math sections of the SAT and ACT college entrance exams.


In Algebra I students learn the skills needed to solve equations and perform manipulations with numbers, variables, equations, and inequalities. Algebra II builds upon Algebra I and prepares students for advanced-level courses.

Algebra is not just a prerequisite for further math classes. It also serves as the foundation for a variety of other subjects. The math required in a physics course demands a solid grounding in algebra. Being able to solve algebraic equations quickly and correctly is also essential for the math sections of the SAT and ACT.


Geometry deals with questions of size, shape, relative position of figures, and the properties of space. Much as its name suggests, Pre-Calculus is designed to develop critical skills that help prepare students for the more intense level of mathematics that Calculus entails. Calculus itself is an advanced, senior level class covering problem solving, reasoning and estimation, functions, derivatives, applications of the derivative, integrals, and application of the integral.

AP Calculus is an even more advanced class for the truly dedicated student of mathematics. AP Calculus AB and BC cover material equivalent to first and second semester college Calculus courses.


Trigonometry studies relationships involving lengths and angles of triangles. While trigonometry is no longer taught by itself, aspects of it appear at all levels of high school mathematics. Trigonometric functions, for example, feature in the curriculum for Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus.
